Thinking about taking a workshop for writing science fiction or fantasy this year? Here are the top ones.
Clarion and Clarion West are the premiere f&sf workshops. This year Clarion features instructors Samuel Delany, Joe Haldeman, Nancy Kress, Gardner Dozos, Kelly Link and Holly Black and Clarion West features instructors Paul Park, Maureen McHugh, Ian MacLeod, Nalo Hopkinson, Ellen Datlow, and Vernor Vinge. Deadline is April 1st, and the workshops take place June 26 through August 4, 2006. Orson Scott Card's Literary Boot Camp takes place June 12-17, 2006. Cost is $725, which does not include housing and meals. It is intended for writers who are serious about professional level work while Uncle Orson's Writing class is open to novices and experts, running June 12-13, for $175. Takes place at Southern Virginia University, Buene Vista, Virginia. Deadline is April 3, 2006. More info at http://www.hatrack.com/. Odyssey: the Fantasy Writing Workshop, June 12 through July 21, 2006. Deadline for regular applications: April 14, 2006. Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire. Cost is $1600 before housing, which can run another $625 to $1250. Robert J. Sawyer will be the writer in residence, while guest lecturers will include Melissa Scott, Jeff VanderMeer, Laurie J. Marks, Christopher Golden, and Shawna McCarthy. Viable Paradise takes place on Martha's Vineyard October 7 through 15, 2006. Deadline June 15, 2006. Tuition is $850, lodging is $125-150 per night. Instructors Cory Doctorow, Debra Doyle, Steven Gould, James Patrick Kelly, James D. McDonald, Laura J. Mixon, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, and Teresa Nielsen Hayden. Alpha is aimed at young writers (ages 14-19) and will be held at the University of Pittsburgh's Greensburg Campus July 19-28, 2006 in conjunction with the science fiction convention, Confluence, July 28th-30th. Deadline for applications is March 31st. Instructors are Theodora Goss, Tamora Pierce, Wen Spencer, and Timothy Zahn.
