Here's ten ways to think about your main character and discover new things about their personality.

Method One: Think about their closet. What items are in there? What is thrown on the closet floor? How about their drawers - are things neatly folded or jammed in any which way? Do they keep any clothes that they never wear?

Method Two: About about their first day of school. What do they remember about it? Who dropped them off? What happened? What did they tell their parent (or parental surrogate) about the experience that night?

Method Three: What games do they like to play? Are they a sore loser or one of those winners who rub it in? Do they like to bet money on a game? Do they prefer cards or dice? What board games are in their hallway closet?

Method Four: What catalogs arrive in their daily mail and which are the ones that they choose to keep? Where do they read them and what do they dream of buying? What have they bought in the past that brings these to them?

Method Five: They've just been confronted by a surprise birthday party. Who threw it for them and where is it? Are there presents? Cake? Entertainment? How do they feel about it all - pleased or mortified? Did they secretly expect it?

Method Six: Follow them around the grocery store in your mind for a while. What items go into their cart and what do they look at but not buy? What aisles do they linger in? What's their favorite comfort food? What do they buy when they're feeling romantic?

Method Seven: Watch them just as closely in their kitchen. What do they like to cook? Where did they learn to cook? Who taught them? Do they have favorite recipes that they use to wow dates? What sort of condition is their kitchen equipment in?

Method Eight: List every Halloween costume they've ever worn, from babyhood to the present, and remember to include which ones were store brought and which homemade.

Method Nine: When they're planning a vacation, where do they like to go and how do they like to get there? Do they pack far ahead of time or at the last minute? Do they keep their passport up to date just in case? What languages do they feel comfortable speaking and what places have they visited in the past? Where would they like to go back to, and what's the one place they would never return to?

Method Ten: What was their favorite class in school and why? Did they have a favorite teacher or mentor? What was it about them that drew that mentor to them? What's their learning style like, slow and steady or quick leaps of intuition?
