Dimensions by Lindsey Michelle
It's true that Dimensions, a new novel by Lindsey Michelle, is an engaging science fiction read. But in fact, it's much more than that. It's also a tale that spins together love affairs, secretive conspiracy, boy-gets-girl/girl-loses-boy, deception, betrayal, and finally, unexpected reconciliation. Read on for the book review.
As the name implies, the setting is not merely location, but multi-dimensionality. Of course there is our familiar dimension, but the main scenes are in a dimension parallel to our own. As the subtle differences begin to unfold, what at first seemed so familiar becomes disturbingly different. The economic system that frames our lives is skewed, although somehow society functions.
Visitors travel from ours to the parallel, usually not knowing why. They stay until the time comes for them to go, and then they are sent back. Mission accomplished.
The common theme throughout the work is the sea. The sound of the waves crashing on the beach never cease. They create a harmony and cadence that pulls the work steadily along, nudging it to it's unexpected conclusion. And the very water holds its own secret, one fundamental to the steady parade of otherworldly visitors.
The central characters are Vera and Sadie. They begin as childhood best friends, and as the story of their lives unfold, the stage becomes increasingly populated by their expanding families and the depth of their interconnections.
Vera and Sadie differ in personality, but they unknowingly share a common trait that makes the tale possible – the ability to enable the parallel dimensional portal. They don't understand the mechanics of it; in fact, the very location of the portal evades them for most of the novel.
And although they believe that maintaining the secrecy of their shared ability will keep them safe, unbeknown to them, there is a puppeteer silently manipulating their lives – someone they would hardly expect. Someone willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of the portal experiment.
The grand experiment seems to be operating flawlessly until, due to a horrible betrayal, things start to spin dangerously out of control. The consequence is a culture clash that threatens the very existence of the parallel dimension.
The central characters work against the clock to stem the rising tide of the rending social fabric, which begins to weave a subplot of developing relationships, conflicts, and finally, a completely unexpected but satisfying turn of events.
