The Final Book of the Dominion Trilogy By Robin Parrish

Sep 2, 2008 Shane Werlinger

Merciless is the final book in the Dominion Trilogy by Robin Parrish. Does Merciless meet the bar set by the first two books or does it fall short?

The final book of the Dominion Trilogy by Robin Parrish is finally here. Merciless is the final hill in the thrilling rollercoaster ride that was the series . Merciless delivers in excitement and wraps up the trilogy with a bow.

Overview of Merciless

Merciless picks up the exact moment that Fearless, book two in the Dominion Trilogy, ends. Grant Borrows’ group had infiltrated the underground city of the secret society called Secretum of Six. Deep in the heart of this city, in a sacred chamber called the Hollow, is a gaping pit where the next part of the prophecy begins.

Julie lies dead. Grant Borrows is falling down the pit to his own demise. The last phase of the prophecy commences as Grant’s spirit leaves his body only to be replaced by Oblivion.

Oblivion is an ancient entity whose mission is to destroy all life. Now with Grant’s power mixed with his own, he is able to bring hell on earth. Forcing all of those that wear the Ring of Dominion under his power, there seems to be no force on earth that can stop them.

Merciless Characters

Parrish has proven he is an excellent writer in the first two books of the Dominion Trilogy. In this trilogy he has woven an intricate tale that was a whirlwind of action and drama. Merciless is no less intricate, but the story is more streamlined. The point of view changes many times, but Parrish is masterful at the switches so the story arc is never confusing.

The characters whose eyes the story of Merciless unfolds before are old friends we have seen in the past, with the exception of Oblivion. We see the horror of being trapped under Oblivion’s power through Alex and Payton’s experience. The love between Daniel and Lisa, as well as everything they go through, is seen through both of their point of views. Ethan, the former FBI agent, is actually working with another secret society to stop the Secretum of Six. We also get a glimpse into the mind of Oblivion, plus Grant chimes in.

Since Parrish introduced the characters, he is able to delve deeper into them in Merciless. We learn about Payton’s past. Parrish takes us through Grant’s history. We learn things about Grant’s family that are shocking. We learn who killed his mom and who his dad is, among other things.

Merciless Sacrifice and Redemption

Parrish has finished the Dominion Trilogy beautifully with Merciless. He displays sacrifice and redemption without being preachy. There are examples of selflessness that bring tears to the eyes of the toughest souls. The wild ride comes to rest and the reader is able to get out of the car safe and sound, if not changed.
