Interview with the creator of a new fantasy book that combines Tolkien, Dr. Seuss, and Monty Python for an out-of-this-world story.

Suite101 met one-on-one with Aaron Mason, writer and creator of the new fantasy illustrated book The Bafflegagging Blundernagging Brothers.

Suite101: Can you tell us about your illustrated book The Bafflegagging Blundernagging Brothers?

Mason: It’s a kind of off-kilter fantasy series that my writing partner Doug Warr and myself developed. It’s about two bumbling brothers that are on a quest to make the world round. It’s kind of like a Dr. Seuss meets J.R.R. Tolkien meets Monty Python world. Very silly, but also a well-constructed world. We spent a lot of time putting in the details but still kept that silly humor to it, like in the Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

Suite101: Who are the main characters, the brothers?

Mason: The two main characters are called Exter and Grimwilch Blundernagging and they are at the beginning, disobedient children. They’re told by their parents to never ever open up a magical chest which contain these creatures called Perplexicating Quiggle-jibs, which if set loose, will make the world flat and magic will rule the day and nothing will make sense.

So the brothers disobey their parents and their quest is to undo their blunder and they have to put all the magic back in the jar. So the series of books will follow their strange adventures from one land to the next and they travel through time and different dimension, meet all strange beings. It’s a lot of fun.

Suite101: It's a fun concept, from where did you draw your inspiration?

Mason: And as far as inspirations for the story, I’m a comic geek, I like a lot of fantasy movies and read a lot of books. I have a fairly active imagination so it was easy for me to put together the pieces and come up with the absurdity of it all.

Suite101: What about the life lessons and the epilogue in your book?

Mason: The book contains life lessons and morals, but we wanted to make it first and foremost as a great adventure, but do it in a way that was extremely visual. People seem to be reacting positively to that and I hope that, if they buy the book, will keep reading and will want to see more. At the end of every book there is an epilogue that will have the beginning of the next book in the series. So at the end of book 1, you get a little snapshot of what book 2 is going to be about. And it’s going to be a great series.
