Wired magazine reports that the FDA has approved using viruses to treat food.

The full story is here: here. This seems to be a story that's crying out to be written soon: viruses used to treat aging vegetables mutate and become intelligent, building new civilizations in the depths of the permafrost in the protagonist's refrigerator. She tries in vain to figure out the mysterious messages being left her by the splinter virus group, which keeps spelling out epigrams in the butter, trying to tip her off. Unfortunately, she is illiterate - her shameful secret in a high tech world. Hilarity ensues.

Or maybe not. Either way, it's interesting.
