» thesnowleopard - Can I get a witness?

Boy, does this sound familiar!

I'm on a specfic writing group and every time I write a female character, some people complain that she can't possibly be a woman because my female characters always do things that are not the least bit warm and fuzzy. I've even had editors complain about it. And yet, that hasn't stopped me from getting published. There are others on the group who complain about the same thing, yet we all get the same comments about the "masculinity" of our female characters over and over again.

thesnowleopard,
This is an old one as well (May '06) but I can't help it. Have you ever heard of hormones? Women don't have the testosterone levels that men do. Thank God. Try having a 900 level and you'll see that women are warm and fuzzy, men barely can contain their aggression. If I had a boatload of estrogen then I would be warm and fuzzy instead of attempting to knock out anyone who steps in my way. (In one way or another.) Women can't be men unless they are using suppliments. So do your characters use suppliments? No hall of fame if they are caught.

The thing is this - people's hormone levels range widely, as do other influences like what they culturally feel is appropriate (or isn't) to their gender. I may be a warm and fuzzy female, but I know any number of men who I think are much nicer. While hormonal differences may be a small part of the puzzle, I don't think it's the whole picture. Ya know what I mean, dude? happy
