It is definitely wiser to write the whole thing through, all at once. This way it is easier to see if something will fit or not. When it is viewed by itself, a single chapter may contain many things that seem beside the point and irrelevant, leaving you to explain to critics why it is there many times. But when the whole book is pieced together, things seem less loose and there is more flow. Chapters themselves tend to suddenly drop. Viewed seperately, this may add to confusion.-- posted by Kayowin_14

Kayowin-14,
I've only published one book, but I find your way the only way. Don't worry about chapters, write the story and the chapters will emerge. My problem was and still is, about half way through, the characters take over and they dictate how the last half ends. I just follow their logical course and they take care of themselves. I don't have much say. That seems strange to me.

It's just BIZARRE how they take over, isn't it? Makes me feel a little schitzy.

My characters often take over as well and take the story in whole new exciting directions.
When I'm writing for The Legends of Mernac, I usually plan out my work by chapter because I'm an organizing freak. It helps me to get a better idea of flow, length, and seeing if I need to add in a few more plot twists.
